CORRECTIONS:
1) This program does not support CGA or MCGA. EGA, VGA, and Tandy 16
color graphics adapters are supported.
2) Tutorial one in the manual says "select the topmost Iranian oil
field". World affairs have since thrust Iraq into the limelight so we have
assigned that oil field to Iraq.
3) Button 1 on the keyboard is the "Insert" key ("0" on the numeric
keypad). The "Enter" (or "Return") functions as button 1 in menus. Button 2
on the keyboard is the "Delete" key ("." on the numeric key). The "Space
bar" toggles the zoom window and this is the default assignment for button 2.
4) The solo opponent "SGT STAN STILL" is the same as "no solo opponent.
5) In the Control Summary Card the key "CTRL-ALT-G" is assigned the
function "Change Film to Game". This is true only when pressed during a
film. If pressed during a solo game the solo opponent is replaced with
the next stronger opponent or reset to the opponent "SGT STAN STILL".
ENHANCEMENTS:
When compared to the original ship version the solo opponent has been
made more agressive. In particular, the "MARS GOD OF WAR" can be a very
tough opponent.
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
Test Drive
Most players say this game is the most exciting when played against another
human. To try this out it isn't necessary to coerce your friend into buying
a copy. You can offer him/her a copy of the disks and give the password over
the phone before you start the game. However, this in no way is meant to
encourage or excuse piracy. Just consider it a "test drive". Hopefully,
your friend will love the game and purchase his or her own copy.
Voice Calls
It's possible to have Command HQ "pick up" an existing call between the two
players. Make sure your telephone and modem are on the same line (if you
have 2 lines this option is probably unnecessary). You can call your
opponent and talk to him/her while you both start the HQ program. Select
MODEM/PHONE under CONNECT OPTIONS. One of you will still need to be the
ANSWER side and the other the DIAL side (it doesn't matter which). When you
are both ready (i.e. the dial side says "enter phone number" and the answer
side says "waiting for a call"), you should both press the ESC key at the
same time. Continue to hold the handset to your phone till you hear the
screech of the both modems and then hangup the handset. You can do the
reverse when a game is over. Send a "chat" note like "let's go to voice".
Then Restart the program (Alt-R). When you see the message "DISCONNECTING"
grab the hand set and wait till the screeching stops. If your opponent did
likewise you can then talk while you watch the film, for instance.
Call Waiting
If one opponent has call waiting, he/she should do the dialing. Simply
precede the phone number you want to dial with "T*70," (or whatever your
local phone company wants with a "T" in front and a "," behind). If you both
have call waiting you will have to take your chances. However, if someone
calls, the game will "disconnect" and "save" so you may both resume at that
spot. (If you have 3-way calling you may be able to disable call waiting
even if you are the answer side but you will have to use the Voice Call note
above).
Network/Lan
It's our intention to write drivers for various networks (PC TALK, GEnie,
Compuserve and Galacticomm BBS systems) as well as Local Area Networks
(Novell and 3-Com) if there is sufficient demand. Check with your favorite
network for information or with MicroProse.
Install Problems
If INSTALL does not work on your system (perish the thought!), you can copy
the files and create the same subdirectories on your hard disk. Then edit
HQ.BAT so that the "switches" match your needs. The default contents are:
HQ2 /AI /GE
The switches and their meaning are: /AA - Adlib sound, /AI - IBM internal
speaker sounds, /AR - Roland sound (actually Roland music but IBM sounds),
/AT - Tandy sounds, /AX - no sounds, /GE - EGA/VGA display, /GT - Tandy
display, /J - Joystick input.
Skipping Splash
If you've seen the big Command HQ letters march across the screen enough for
a lifetime and would like to skip the opening "splash" animation, you can
edit HQ.BAT (with any text editor) to replace "HQ2" with "CHQ".
"Cheat" keys
CTRL-ALT-W: This key flips "who am I". Although it is possible to press
this key combination to flip sides during a 2-player game, it should be
considered an instantaneous resignation by the player who pushed (claiming it
was an accident won't work). However, it can be an interesting way to extend
a game that has become very lopsided. Send a message over chat first.
Something like - "If you're so good try to win from my side!" before you
press the keys.
CTRL-ALT-K: This key can be used to "kill" one of your own units.
Select the unit or plane you want to kill and press Ctrl-Alt-K. This
function works in solo or 2-player games.
CTRL-ALT-M: This key gives your side 10 billion dollars up to a max of
150. The next press after 150 restarts your money to 0. This key only works
in solo games.
Port Conflicts
Since Command HQ uses both mouse and modem in very intimate ways, it may
uncover port conflicts you didn't know you had before. If you're having
mouse problems and you're using a Microsoft driver 6.0 or higher (or 100%
compatible) it's likely you have port assignment problems. Make sure there
are no extra serial ports or that no two of them are assigned the same
number. (Port assignments problems can also cause the modem to fail to
initialize).
Modem Problems
We've tried all types of "Hayes compatible" modems but no telling what the
future holds. If you are having trouble, you can edit the modem
initialization command in the MODEM.INI file until it works. The only line
that we really need is the 1st one. Replace all others with lines your modem
manual recommends. No single line can be over 39 characters and the total
characters of text can't exceed 179. (Don't be disturbed if you notice your
modem is only working at 1200 baud. We do that on purpose for reliability
and compatibility. You may need to "reset" your modem if the software you
use after this game does not set the modem to your normal speed).
Connect Problems
If the modem works in most cases but you're having problems connecting with a
particular opponent you might try making the opposite connection (the dialer
modem becomes the answer modem). If it still doesn't work, you can always
use another communication program (like Procomm) to make the connection first
(use 1200 baud, 8 data bits, no parity). Exit the communication program
without dropping the connection. Then start HQ as though you were using a
direct serial connection.
Model Constraints
Under certain methods of play you may hit what were supposed to be
"invisible" limits. I never expected players to regularly bump against
these constraints -- but there is only enough space for 100 units, 30
planes and 10 satellites. If you find yourself facing the message "too
many units," it means you have hit the limit and it's time to stop
building and start fighting.
Feedback
I'd love to hear from you about what you liked or didn't, suggestions for
further products or even challenges to play a modem game. (I appreciate all
mail even when I'm awful about answering it). Contact me at:
